My son and I have been walking. He has been very sick and the walking helps him get better.
About six weeks ago we began recording his walks on an app (Strava), which lets you include a photo. It started small, with me taking the photos because he was in so much pain—that’s a hard thing to lift your head from. But as he has grown stronger and moved each day towards being better, the photo has become his thing, and our mutual focus. We now look up together, look around, take note of the sun and sky and colour, because we are treasure hunters—searching for that perfect, most unusual, most intriguing, most bright and strange and lovely shot.
It has transformed our walks into something Other. The act of moving—pushing through the pain and fatigue—has also become an act of looking up and paying attention to beautiful things. This is how wellness begins. This is how it takes hold.
My son took every one of these photos. 💙
