Creative Writing Workshops for Young People

lets-write

For the past seven years, I have been running creative writing workshops for young people in the Wollongong area. I run workshops from home, mentor students one-on-one, and work with schools and the South Coast Writers Centre. I also do one-off workshops and in 2016 ran a creative writing workshop through a Live and Local event for the Sydney Writers Festival.

My focus as a writing mentor is to get young people excited to write and express themselves, and help them build their writing skills as they practice the art of creative writing. My workshops are a supportive, safe place where people get to write, receive and give feedback, discuss the craft of writing (amongst other things!) and discover their unique voice.

The following workshop groups have spaces available for 2017:

YOUNG WRITERS PROGRAM at the South Coast Writers Centre

I am the facilitator of the Young Writers Program at the South Coast Writers Centre, which is based at the University of Wollongong. The Centre currently offers one workshop opportunity for young writers, with the option of a second group for younger writers (aged 11-13), if there is enough interest.

THE YOUNG WRITERS COLLECTIVE (for ages 14 – 18)

These weekly workshops are for keen young writers who would like to develop their creative writing skills in a friendly and supportive group environment.

The Young Writers Collective explores the craft of story building—from creating unique characters, settings, and plots, to exploring genre and establishing a distinct writer’s ‘voice’. The group also looks at other writing forms such as personal essays, poetry and playwriting. The young writers write together at each workshop and have the opportunity every week to share their work.

The intention of the Young Writers Collective is to be both a class and a community. Here, writers can learn more about creative writing, discuss words, life and art, and comfortably share their work with each other in a relaxed and supportive space.

When does it meet?

The Young Writers Collective meets every Thursday afternoon from 4-6, at the University of Wollongong.

How much does it cost?

The cost is $160 per term, for ten workshops. An additional one-off membership fee of $22 is required, and will give you membership to the South Coast Writers Centre for the year.

Numbers in this group are limited. If you would like to join, please contact me on helenafoxdunan@gmail.com

OTHER WORKSHOPS

THE WRITERS ROOM

The Writers Room is a Saturday workshop group I run from my home.

The Writers Room is for independent young writers who would like to develop their projects in a community environment. The Room is more casual than my other workshop groups—it runs a lot like a writers’ cafe, where we eat brownies, drink tea, talk (a lot), and write. People often write for at least an hour in these sessions. I offer thoughts on writing and a prompt at every session. Writers can choose to use the prompt or they can focus instead on an ongoing project. If people want feedback on their projects, they can share their writing with the group and receive constructive feedback.

The age range of the members of the Room is between 14 & 20 years old, with the majority of writers in their senior years of high school (Yrs 10-12) and at University.

The group meets from 1.30 to 4pm and the cost is $15 per session. You do not need to enrol for the Term—you simply let me know each week whether you plan to attend.
